Regardless of where your toddler grows up, or whether they’re a boy or a girl, most parents can agree that one thing toddlers have in common is a tendency to hurt themselves. They’re naturally curious creatures, and as such they can find themselves in danger.
And while discouraging their curiosity is not recommended, keeping them safe is. Here are some tips for teaching safe habits and keeping them safe, all while encouraging plenty of curiosity.
Fence The Backyard
Perhaps one of the most dangerous areas of your house is the backyard. This is because there are so many places where kids can get hurt. Not to mention they can even sneak out if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s so critical that you make sure that if you have a backyard that it is properly fenced and protected. This won’t just give you extra peace of mind, but it will also increase your privacy.
Baby Proof The Inside of Your Home
As your child begins to wander around, you will notice that they start to get into more and more areas that they shouldn’t. This is why you want to make sure that you put gates in areas of the house that could be dangerous, like the garage, or even the kitchen.
The last thing you want is them getting into dangerous products or making something fall that could seriously injure them. Safety gates throughout your house are a great way to block off unsafe areas, and ensure your toddler doesn’t get into mischief.
Another tip for keeping them safe is rounding off sharp corners. One of the most common ways that toddlers get injured in the house is by tripping and hitting the corner of a table or shelf, so putting rubber bumper guards on sharp corners, you can significantly reduce the risk of trips to the emergency room.
Supervise Near Water
Whether your child is in a waiting pool or the bath, it’s incredibly important that you supervise at all times. Drowning is one of the leading causes of injury-related deaths in the toddler age bracket, and it usually happens much faster than you might imagine.
It can happen in a matter of seconds so it’s incredibly important that you stay vigilant. Even a bucket of water can be deadly, so always make sure that you’re watching closely whenever your child is around water.
Teach Healthy Habits
Part of keeping your child safe is teaching them smart habits in potentially dangerous environments. For example, they shouldn’t talk to strangers, and they should never run away from you in public. Reinforcing safety habits can help develop a sense of awareness at a young age that will continue into their older years and hopefully keep them free of harm.
